Cyber Security Myths

In the early ‘90s, internet was considered by many as a domain for nerds; but has since then become an essential need for everyone. However, the rise of the internet has also led to an unfortunate increase in cyber security challenges like hacking.

While some argue that internet can never be 100% secure, we believe otherwise. But for us to really reach that Utopia, we would need to eliminate some common cyber security myths.

Common Myths of Cyber Security

“If you think technology can solve your security problems, then you don’t understand the problems and you don’t understand the technology.” – Bruce Schneier

Myth #1: Antivirus and firewalls are 100% effective

It’s a fact that antivirus and firewalls are two important components protecting your system. But these alone can never protect you against all types of attacks. Updating these tools on a regular basis and using them in combo with other security services, like a VPN, will help in protecting you against cyber attacks.

Myth #2: Once you have downloaded the software, you don’t have to deal with it anymore

Your software may be one of the best and most secure when you download it. But after a period of time, it gets vulnerable and completely unsecure. This is because our cyber world is constantly evolving, and our tools need to evolve with it.

Vendors, therefore, release software updates regularly in order to minimize any vulnerabilities they find in their product. It is preferential if you enable the ‘auto update’ option, if there is any, in your software.

Myth # 3: There is No Important Data on My Machine, so it’s not necessary to protect it

Your opinions regarding the importance of data may differ from that of hackers. Let’s suppose that you have documents from your previous company which are of no use to you. But for hackers, they may be equivalent to a gold mine. Even your old email addresses can be of use to hackers so they can access your friends list and use it for targeted advertising and spamming.

Myth #4: Hackers only attack celebrities and businesspeople

It is naive to think that hackers only attack the famous and the rich. Anyone can become a victim of identity theft. Hackers try to seek the biggest rewards for least effort done. They mostly target databases which contain information which can be of use. So, if you think that your information is safe in a database, think again!

Myth #5: If your PC is slow, it means that it needs to be replaced

Many a times, running heavy software reduces the speed of your computer. It can also happen because of a process running in the background, which is eating up your computing power. And if your computer suddenly slows down, then it may have been compromised by malware or spyware.

Myth #6: Getting rid of all vulnerabilities is possible

An ordinary system deals with about 50,000+ vulnerabilities each day. Even more vulnerabilities are being added to this list as time passes. So how can your system actually deal with all these vulnerabilities? To be honest, it’s impossible. But it is possible to reduce these threats by promptly following the best cyber security habits.

Final Words

In response to online threats, government bodies and internet corporations from around the world have increased their efforts to combat the growing threats. NCSAM is one of the efforts initiated by the National Cyber Security Division of the US. It’s a cyber security awareness campaign which runs each year in October.

This year marks the 11th edition of NCSAM, and PureVPN is participating in it. So, stay tuned and keep learning about the risks associated with Cyber Security and tips to avoid them. Get to know more about cyber security with PureVPN and NCSAM.
