How to Block a Website on Chrome Without an Extension

If you don’t feel comfortable using an extension, then there are other ways to block a nagging website. There are two simple ways to block websites if you are the Chrome Enterprise administrator of your computer.

Blocking Websites Editing the Hosts File (Windows)

  1. First, you have to open a file on your computer. Go to the C: drive > Windows > System32 > drivers > etc (full path: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc).
Go-to-c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
  1. Open the host file via Notepad and you will see the following window.

  1. Now, add the websites you wish to block after the IP address. For instance,

127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com. Keep adding websites after the # sign in the same order as we have mentioned here.

  1. Press CTRL+S to save the file and you are done.

If you have followed the steps carefully, you won’t access the blocked websites. To re-enable access to this website, remove the line from your host’s file. Note that you may need to reboot to have the changes take effect.

Blocking Websites Using Your Router (Mac & Windows)

The second way is to block website from your router’s configuration settings. We promise to keep the steps as simple as possible, so you don’t screw with the admin settings and block website too.

But there is a small caveat. If you block website via your WiFi router, all connected devices will lose access to particular websites. Does it matter? No. Then we shall proceed.

  1. Find your router’s IP address by typing and clicking on WiFi settings from the search menu, after the prompt, select hardware properties and note down your IPV4 address on a piece of paper.

  1. Type your IP address on the web browser to open another login prompt. Some of you may not have access to your router’s configuration settings, while others can type their login credentials.
  1. Once you enter the main dashboard, select the Security tab > Blocked site settings > add websites that you want to block.
