Russian Cyber Attacks at US Airports

The US claims to be one of the most secure states in the world but the incident of cyber Attacks in the US airports proves that the most secure places in the world are not secure anymore.

On Monday, the US Airport’s websites were hit by Cyber attacks. The attacks involve DOS and DDOS. The attacks did not result in operational disruptions of the airport while a massive number of airports websites in the US are impacted by “denial of service” attacks, said John Hultquist, head of intelligence analysis at cybersecurity firm – Mandiant.

A source reported, “It’s an inconvenience.”

This kind of attack sends a huge amount of traffic to the website through bots or we can say artificial users which overloads the website and brings the web servers and systems down for some amount of time.

“Killnet,” a pro-Russian hacker group, is claimed to be behind the attack, according to Hultquist. While there is no evidence of the involvement of the Russian government in these attacks.

The Port Authority reported the attack to the cybersecurity agency at 3 am that the LaGuardia Airport system has been hit by cyber-attacks. After a While, LaGuardia’s systems have been restored but other airports’ websites have been attacked around the US.

The spokesperson said “The attacks began around 11 a.m. this morning and they continue. The attackers are attempting to overwhelm our website so that it becomes unavailable to the public.”

Furthermore, he said “At this time, the attacks have not been impactful, though we are closely monitoring these attacks and any others. We are also sharing information on these attacks with TSA, CISA, and other airports,”

Killnet” – a Russian hacking group is suspected for these cyberattacks at US airports because a few days back the same hacking group claimed the responsibility for cyberattacks on several US government websites.

“We are pretty clear it’s a Russian cyber group that claimed responsibility,” Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said. He added “We are asking our authorities to confirm who did it and then take the appropriate strong action so the Russians know they cannot get away with this. Putin has a lot of nerve, after his brutal vicious war against the Ukrainian people, to now say he has the right to retaliate because they protected themselves with a bridge is outrageous.”
