NCSAM’s History

National Cyber Security Awareness Month, better known as NCSAM, is a month dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. It takes place in October of each year and aims to highlight the dangers lurking on the web and the precautions users must take to browse the web securely. NCSAM began in 2004 by the National Cyber Security Alliance and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Since its inception, the movement has spread to multiple countries where a secure Internet message is much needed. This year marks the 17th anniversary of the campaign.

Why Your Cybersecurity Matters

These are the reasons why you should be concerned about your cybersecurity:

  • Cyber Terrorism – violent acts are carried out that can result in significant harm.
  • Cybercrime – noteworthy increase in the number of cases due to digitization.
  • Reputation Loss – it takes years to build trust and only seconds to destroy it, but forever to repair it.
  • Hackers are becoming more cunning.
  • IoT is growing exponentially.
  • The rising cost of data breaches.
  • Your personal lives are not so private anymore; stalkers are always watching you.
Why Your Cybersecurity Matters

Consequences of Weak Cybersecurity

A total of 3,800 data breaches were reported in 2019 and 2020 alone, a 50% increase over the last four years. These data breaches cost individuals and businesses billions of dollars in total. A recent report suggests that each data breach costs an average of $8.19 million. With that in mind, 2019 saw data breaches costing users over $31 billion.

The recent Twitter hack of prominent personalities such as Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and several others shows the magnitude of data breaches. Popular video communications app, Zoom, also experienced a data breach where 500,000 login credentials were up for sale on the dark web. If you haven’t been a part of a data breach, consider yourself lucky. Apart from data breaches, users commonly fall prey to social engineering attacks such as phishing, smishing, and vishing. The cybersecurity realm aims to educate users to be aware of their surroundings and make conscious decisions to stay secure on the web. Here’s an illustration of the annual number of data breaches and exposed records in the US from 2005 to 2019 (in millions)
