If you’re forwarding ports on your router to play games on your gaming console, you might find assigning a static IP address on your Xbox or any other gaming console a better solution. This is because each time you restart your console, you will get a different IP address and that could cause your port forwards to stop working.

You can either assign a static IP on your router or set up a static IP address on your Xbox 360 console. However, if you have a router that does not allow you to manually assign IP addresses, you will need to set up a static IP address within your Xbox 360 console.

How to set up a Static IP address in Xbox 360 Console

If you’ve got a wireless router that doesn’t allow you to manually assign internal IP addresses, follow these instructions to set up a static IP address in your Xbox 360 console:

  1. Find out your IP address, subnet mask, and gateway your Xbox 360 console. To locate this information:
  • Head over to the System Settings menu in your Xbox 360 Dashboard
  • Select Network Settings
  • Select Configure Network
  • Once you’re in the Basic Settings tab, you will find the IP addressSubnet Mask, and Gateway. Note them down as you will require them later
  1. Next, you have to login to your router (through a device that’s connected to the same network as your Xbox 360). Once logged in, note down the DHCP range used by your router.
  • Now, you will need to choose a figure between 2 and 254 that is outside of your router’s DHCP range to assign to your Xbox 360. Here’s an example, if your router’s DHCP range is 100-254 you could choose a number between 2 and 50 and if your router uses 50-200, you could try a number between 2 and 49.
  1. Before you head over to assign this number, you’ll have to see if it’s available. To find out the number’s availability, head over to the command prompt.

Here’s how to open the command prompt:

  • On the Windows Start menu, type cmd
  • Click cmd and a black window with white text should open.

Here’s how to check if the IP address is available:

  • Type ping
  • Hit the space bar
  • Then type in the IP address you want to check
  • Press Enter
  1. Now head over to the Xbox 360 Dashboard. This is where you’ll set the internal IP address to the number you have selected.

In the Xbox 360 Dashboard:

  • Go to My Xbox
  • Open System
  • Select Settings
  • Select Network Settings
  • Select Configure Network
  • On the Basic Settings tab, select the IP Settings area
  • Select Manual
  • Next, select IP Address
  • Type in the IP address you have chosen and select Done
  • On the Edit IP Settings screen, select Subnet Mask
  • Type in the subnet mask (usually 255.255.255.0). Select Done
  • Select Gateway
  • Enter the gateway and select Done
  • On the Edit IP Settings screen, select Done
  • Press the button on your Xbox remote to navigate back to the Network Settings screen
  1. Test the connection to Xbox Live.

In the Xbox 360 Dashboard:

  • Head over to the Network Settings screen and choose Test Xbox Live Connection
  • The test will display your Network, Internet and Xbox LIVE connection status
  • When your Network Status on the right of the screen shows that your Network, Internet, and Xbox LIVE are all connected you are finished
  1. Ensure that the DNS Settings are set to Automatic.

That’s all it takes to configure a static IP address on your Xbox 360 gaming console.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a static IP address?

A static IP address is a fixed IP address that you assign to your Xbox 360. This means that your Xbox 360 will always have the same IP address, which can be useful for port forwarding and other networking purposes.

What IP address should I use for my Xbox 360?

The IP address you use for your Xbox 360 should be a unique address within your local network. It should not be the same as the IP address of any other device on your network. You can typically use any available IP address within your network range, but it’s recommended to use an address that is outside of the range of addresses that your router assigns automatically via DHCP.

Can I change the IP address of my Xbox 360 back to dynamic (automatic) if I want to?

Yes, you can change the IP address of your Xbox 360 back to dynamic (automatic) if you want to. Simply go back to the “IP settings” menu and select “Automatic” instead of “Manual.”
