Why Do You Need an IP Address?
IP addresses make it possible for devices to communicate and send data with one another over the Internet, much in the same way phone numbers allow people to talk to each other on their smart phone or telephone. If there were no IP addresses, devices wouldn’t be able to connect to the Internet let alone send and receive data!
The Difference between Public IP Address and Private IP Address
Just as your Internet Service Provider (ISP) assigns your network a public IP address, your router assigns a private IP address to devices within your network. They both serve the same purpose, yet are vastly different from each other.
Public IP Addresses
Your ISP issues you a public (external) IP address which is visible to the outside world whenever you go online. When you request a webpage, this unique IP address is sent along with it. The ISP then uses this to determine which webpage is requested by the customer. Websites too will be able to access your public IP address.
Private IP Addresses
Your router automatically issues a private (internal or local) IP address to each device connected to your network. Your private IP address is only visible within your Local Area Network (LAN) and allows data to be passed to the intended device.
IPv4 vs. IPv6 Addresses
Known as the original Internet addressing system, Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) uses a 32-bit address scheme which allows for a total of 4,294,967,296 possible addresses.
With the increasing proliferation of devices, though, the number of available IPv4 addresses will soon be exhausted as every smart phone, printer, laptop, game console, and even vending machine that connects to the Internet requires an IP address.
However, the good news is that a new Internet addressing system, called Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), is actively being deployed to meet the global demand for more Internet addresses.
Since it uses a 128-bit address scheme instead of a 32-bit scheme, IPv6 theoretically allows for a staggering 340 undecillion possible addresses, accommodating the ever-growing demand to connect more devices to the Internet.
Both versions of IP addresses can easily be distinguished. IPv4 uses a string of numbers separated by dots or periods (i.e. 22.214.171.124.). On the other hand, IPv6 uses 8 groups of four numbers and letters separated by colons (i.e. 2041: 08bd: 4dc3: 6a46: f329: 74ca: ed7c: fa92).
How are IP Addresses Assigned to Devices?
Both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are distributed in a hierarchical fashion. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), as the operator of the Internet Assigned Number Authority (IANA), distributes IP address blocks to the five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) – in Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia Pacific.
From there, the RIRs distribute smaller blocks of IP addresses to ISPs as well as other Internet operators who, in turn, assign these addresses to the end user.

What Is the IP Address 127.0.0.1?

How Do I Know If My IP address Is Static or Dynamic?
