Q1: If you weren’t in marketing, what profession do you think you’d be pursuing?

Youssef: If I wasn’t in marketing, I believe I would have pursued a career in data science. My interest in marketing is deeply rooted in analyzing patterns, understanding consumer behavior, and leveraging data to make informed decisions. Transitioning those interests to data science seems like a natural shift, considering the field’s reliance on similar analytical skills to uncover insights and drive decisions.

Data science, with its focus on extracting knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data, fascinates me because it blends statistical analysis, technology, and business strategy—areas I am passionate about. 

The ability to use data to solve complex problems and predict future trends aligns closely with the analytical aspects of marketing that I enjoy the most. I’d like to use my analytical skills to contribute to innovations and strategic decisions in whatever industry I am in.

Q2: Can you please tell us about a campaign you’re particularly proud of?

Youssef: There isn’t only one campaign that stands out, but multiple campaigns for both mobile app and web that fill me with pride. They involved a comprehensive strategy to boost the user base. Recognizing the highly competitive landscape, our goal was not only to increase trials but also to improve the quality of acquired users, ensuring they were likely to convert to paid subscriptions. 

The campaign was a multi-channel effort that leveraged targeted content marketing, paid search, programmatic ads, social media advertising, affiliate marketing, CTV, and email marketing. We also launched a targeted paid search and social media advertising campaign aimed at high-intent keywords and audiences. By using a mix of broad and niche targeting, we were able to capture the attention of users at different stages of the buyer’s journey, from awareness to consideration to decision.

We fostered, and still foster, a deeper understanding of our audience and refined our approach to user acquisition. It exemplified the importance of aligning messaging and features with user needs and interests, the power of personalized retargeting, and the value of a cohesive, cross-channel strategy that moves users seamlessly from discovery to conversion. 

Youssef: Staying updated on industry trends is crucial in the fast-paced fields of user acquisition and performance marketing. I employ a multi-faceted approach to ensure I’m always at the forefront of the latest developments, strategies, and technologies. 

Here’s how I keep myself informed:

  1. I regularly read reputable marketing and technology publications and blogs such as AdWeek, Marketing Land, TechCrunch, and Moz. These sources provide insights into emerging trends, case studies, and thought leadership articles that keep me informed about the broader marketing landscape.
  2. Social media platforms like LinkedIn, Reddit, and X (formerly Twitter) are invaluable for following thought leaders, brands, and influencers in the marketing space. Online communities and forums, such as GrowthHackers and Reddit’s marketing threads, are also excellent for discussions, advice, and staying connected with the pulse of the industry.
  3. Networking with other marketing professionals through industry associations or groups, both online and offline, provides a platform for sharing experiences and insights. This peer-to-peer learning is invaluable for understanding practical applications of new trends and technologies.

AI’s prowess in analyzing extensive datasets in real-time, when paired with Blockchain’s unmatched ability to manage transactions and user data with transparency and security, is changing the landscape.

This level of personalization not only enhances the customer journey but also improves engagement and significantly increases conversion rates. AI technologies, such as machine learning algorithms, natural language processing, and predictive analytics, alongside Blockchain’s secure, decentralized data management, are reshaping how we understand and interact with our audiences. 

This synergy makes marketing efforts more efficient, effective, and trustworthy, representing a new frontier in creating meaningful customer experiences and opening up innovative avenues for marketing strategy and execution.

Youssef: If I were to explore any profession for a day, diverging entirely from User Acquisition, I’d choose to be an MMA fighter. This choice might seem far removed from the world of digital marketing, but it’s deeply rooted in a philosophy of personal development that I find invaluable. 

Engaging in MMA fighting, even hypothetically for just a day, symbolizes the ultimate test of physical and mental discipline, resilience, grit, and strategic thinking, considering that the body is a physical manifestation of the mind.

MMA fighting demands a level of dedication and perseverance that transcends the physical aspects of the sport, embedding lessons of humility, continuous improvement, and the importance of a growth mindset— qualities that are directly transferable to any professional or personal setting.

Youssef: My favorite marketing word is “engagement.” This term encapsulates the essence of what modern marketing strives to achieve: meaningful interactions between brands and their audiences.

It represents the shift from transactional exchanges to fostering genuine conversations, understanding customer needs, and creating value that resonates on a personal level.

Youssef: One digital campaign that truly stands out and that I wish I had conceptualized is Spotify’s “Wrapped” campaign. This annual campaign brilliantly leverages data personalization to engage its users by providing them with a year-end review of their listening habits. 

It not only highlights the most listened-to songs, artists, and genres of each user but also integrates social sharing features that encourage users to share their unique musical year with friends across social media platforms.

Youssef: If my career in performance marketing were a jigsaw puzzle, the missing piece would be “Mastery of Emerging Technologies and Platforms.”
