What is Minecraft’s buried treasure and where are they located?

Minecraft’s Buried Treasure stands out as a generated structured box within the game’s dynamic landscapes.

Usually, their primary habitat is the Beach biome but you might catch them in various Ocean biomes as well.

Surprisingly though, the Bedrock Edition even allows them to surface in Stony Shores, excluding Rivers from the treasure map.

And true to their name, these treasures are hidden beneath at least one block, often under a layer of Sand, although the biome can influence this covering.

Note: If you’re on the hunt, keep your eyes out for  Minecraft’s Buried Treasures in the top-right corner of a world chunk, the smallest variety of maps.

Why is the Treasure So Important?

Buried Treasure holds a key role for underwater adventurers because it’s the only spot where you can get the special Heart of the Sea item.

  • This magical item becomes extra useful when combined with Nautilus Shells to create something cool called a Conduit
  • Now, a Conduit is like a magical device that gives you some awesome powers when you’re underwater or in the rain.
  • It gives you the ability to breathe underwater forever, see in the dark like a superhero, and even move faster!

Treasure Maps and Where to Get Them?

If you’re on a quest for buried treasure chests in Minecraft, the easiest way is to grab yourself a treasure map. Look for these maps in underwater ruins or shipwrecks – they’re like hidden treasures leading you to even more treasures! So, when you’re hanging out at the beach or sailing the high seas, stay alert.

A Handy Tip

Use a boat when sailing at sea; it makes spotting ruins and shipwrecks very easy. Just make sure you know how to hop out of the boat when you spot something exciting!

How to Use the Map

Alright, so once you’ve got that treasure map in your hands and studied the area it points to, it’s time to get moving! Now, sometimes you luck out, and the map shows a place you’re already close to. But most times, get ready for a bit of a journey – like a few Minecraft days kind of journey.

The smaller your player icon looks on the map, the farther you are from the treasure. But when you’re walking about 1027 blocks away from the map’s spot, your icon goes back to its usual size, which means you’re getting close.

But the tricky part: the map won’t tell you if you’re going the right way. But if you stroll around with the map open, you’ll notice the mark moving as you go north, south, east, or west.

So, here’s the tip: when you’re nearing the map area, any move you make will shake up your in-map icon.

Example:

  • If you’re heading north and your icon slides to the right, you’re on the right track.
  • Move south, and the icon will just wiggle a bit to the right if you’re too far.

Types of Maps

There are three types of Maps

  • Woodland map.
  • Ocean map.
  • Buried treasure.

And if you’re on the hunt for the underground loot, it’s the buried treasure map you want.

How to Find a Buried Treasure Map

Step 1: Go to Ocean Biome

  • If you’re up for a watery adventure, your best move is to head to the ocean biome and meet some dolphins.
  • Once you spot those playful dolphins, catch some Salmon and Cod and toss them a snack – but make sure it’s raw!
Ocean Biome

  • Once you feed these dolphins, they’ll become your underwater guides, showing you the way to either a Shipwreck or Underwater Ruins.
  • It might take a couple of fish treats to seal the deal, but soon enough, you’ll be on your way to some underwater discoveries!

Step 2: Find a Shipwreck or Ocean Ruin

Shipwrecks:

  • Shipwrecks, like sunken ships from days gone by, are lurking beneath the ocean waves.
Shipwrecks

  • They pop up in all sorts of places—mostly underwater, but sometimes you’ll catch them half on land or even buried on the beach.
  • Just remember when you’re looking for shipwrecks, watch out for mobs like drowned—they might pop up, so stay alert!

Pro tip: if you’re diving into a shipwreck in the ocean biome, gulp down a Night Vision potion to turn that water crystal clear.

Ocean ruins:

Ocean ruins

  • These underwater wonders show up only in ocean biomes and kind of resemble an underwater village.

  • They’re a bit trickier to come by than shipwrecks, and navigating them can be like walking through a maze.
  • When you find one just enter the buildings of an ocean ruin, and you’ll stumble upon chests packed with loot, just waiting to be discovered.

Here’s a helpful tip: if you’re exploring a chest right in the heart of the ocean, make sure you’ve got some Respiration and Aqua Affinity enchantments on your armor. These enchantments are like magic scuba gear, letting you reach the ocean floor without worrying about running out of breath.

Step 3: Hunt down “Map Chest”

  • Look for “Map Chest” inside shipwrecks.
  • In each wreck, you can find up to three chests – the Treasure Chest, Supply Chest, and the mysterious Map Chest, each loaded with goodies.
  • To grab a treasure map, keep your eyes out for the map chest, usually hiding in the lower part of the ship.

Quick note: Map chests don’t come with big signs saying, “I’m the map chest!” But if you find a chest down low, there’s a 100 percent chance it’s got that coveted buried treasure map inside.

Step 4: Time for treasure hunting!

  • Open the “Map Chest” you found.
  • Grab that “Buried Treasure Map,” and stash it in your inventory.
  • Now, you’re all set to track down the hidden loot!

Whether you’re on Java or Bedrock, the chances of stumbling upon a Treasure map in a shipwreck are the same. It’s a solid 100%! But if you decide to explore Underwater Ruins, the odds are a bit different: 41.7% for Small Chest Ruins and 43.5% for Big Chest Ruins.

How to Find Buried Treasure in Minecraft With a Treasure Map

Step 1: Open Treasure Map and look for Red X

  • Take a good look at the map. Hunt for a massive red X, like the kind pirates mark on their treasure maps.
  • Your little character icon will be hanging out in the corner, and the map will have a brownish tint, showing off a drawing of the land with a giant red X
  • If you’re far from the loot, the map shows land shapes with the ocean wearing orange stripes.
  • But as you get closer to the treasure, that map starts looking more and more normal.
  • Sometimes, right in the middle of the ocean, you might stumble upon a chest, just waiting to be opened. So, follow that Red X.

Step 2: Time to Dig In!

  • Now that you’re right on the spot marked with a cool Red X, it’s digging time!
  • Start digging around the Red X to uncover that buried treasure.
  • Make sure your little white dot on the map is right in the middle of the Red X to speed things up.

Step 3: Let’s open the Buried Chest

  • Once that treasure box peeks out at you, start digging until you reach it.
  • Then, get ready to pop that chest open and uncover the goodies inside.

How to Find Buried Treasure Quickly Using F3

Alright, treasure hunters, here’s a neat trick to find buried treasure faster using F3.

  1. Get to the Red X on your Map.
  2. Hit F3 + G to Unveil the Chunk’s Center Blocks.
  3. Now just dig!

Remember, the chunk borders you see will be just for the chunk you’re standing in, not all of them at once. So, focus on your current spot.

How to Find Treasure Without A Map

If you’re feeling a bit impatient and want to skip the usual treasure map routine, you can go straight to the source, but fair warning—it might take a bit of time.

Buried treasures like to hang out in coastal spots, shipwrecks, and ocean ruins. The most difficult part is figuring out where to start digging because, sadly, the treasure doesn’t just pop up on your map when you’re close.

Here’s a tip: stick to the beaches and keep an eye out for any sand that looks a bit extra suspicious. You know, like it’s hiding something special.

How Deep is Buried Treasure in Minecraft?

Buried treasures are like secret chests hiding in the ground, underneath things like sand or gravel. These buried chests are usually hiding under one to three blocks, but they can go as deep as 15 blocks if they feel like challenging your patience and hard work.
