In a series of AI-driven assistant endeavors, Microsoft has now revealed its plans to discontinue support for the standalone Cortana app in Windows.
“We are making some changes to Windows that will impact users of the Cortana app. Starting in late 2023, we will no longer support Cortana in Windows as a standalone app. However, you can still access powerful productivity features in Windows and Edge, which have increased AI capabilities.”
Will it be missed?
Cortana, renowned for its voice-based assistance and a wide array of tasks, such as reminders, calendar events, weather updates, and web searches, debuted as part of the Windows Phone operating system.
Over time, it expanded its reach to various platforms, including Windows 10, Android, and iOS. Deeply integrated into Microsoft’s ecosystem, Cortana was designed to interact with other Microsoft products seamlessly.
According to a support document recently published and spotted by Windows Central, Microsoft intends to retire Cortana in late 2023, marking the end of an 8-year journey since its inclusion in Windows 10 back in 2015.
It’s important to note that this change solely affects Cortana in Windows. The productivity assistant, Cortana, will remain available in Outlook mobile, Teams mobile, Microsoft Teams display, and Microsoft Teams rooms.
The announcement follows Microsoft’s earlier decision to withdraw support for the Cortana mobile app, which occurred two years ago, starting March 31, 2021.
The replacement to offer
Windows Copilot, the AI-powered digital assistant unveiled during the recent Build conference, has already assumed the role of Windows’ digital assistant, filling the void left by Cortana. Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer for Windows and Devices, announced that Windows Copilot would enter the preview phase for Windows 11 in June.
Microsoft is recommending several of its recently launched products that serve as replacements for Cortana, building upon its capabilities. These include
- Voice access in Windows 11, enabling PC control through voice commands,
- the new AI-driven Bing search engine, and
- the Microsoft 365 Copilot AI productivity tool.
“We are thrilled to continue innovating and leveraging AI to assist you in working smarter and faster. We hope you enjoy the new avenues that AI opens up, allowing you to save time and concentrate on what truly matters to you,” Microsoft expressed.
