Microsoft is pulling the plug on passwords, and it’s happening faster than you might think!

Starting this July, Microsoft Authenticator will no longer support the autofill password feature. And by August 2025, any saved passwords inside the app will be gone for good. The company is accelerating its move toward passkeys, which use biometric data like your fingerprint, Face ID, or a device PIN to log you in securely, without needing traditional passwords.

If you’re currently using Microsoft Authenticator to store and autofill passwords, it’s time to take action, or risk losing access to critical logins.

What’s Changing and When

Microsoft began phasing out password support in the Authenticator app last month by blocking new password entries, and now, even bigger changes are just weeks away. In July, the autofill password functionality will be disabled, and by August, all saved passwords will be permanently deleted.

Microsoft recommends users adopt passkeys, which are safer than traditional passwords and resistant to phishing. But what if you’re not quite ready to give up your passwords, or still need them for apps, devices, or websites that don’t yet support passkeys?

Here’s Your Best Option: PureVPN’s Integrated Password Manager

While Microsoft is ditching password storage in the Authenticator app, PureVPN offers a better, more secure way to manage your credentials without relying on risky browser storage. Our Password Manager is ideal for those who want more control, more security, and zero compromise. Here’s what sets it apart:

  • Fully integrated with PureVPN for a seamless experience
  • Top-tier Dark Web Monitoring to alert you of breaches
  • Tracker & Ad Blocker for added privacy
  • The ability to sync across all your devices
  • Completely independent of browsers—no Chrome or Edge vulnerabilities to worry about!

Unlike browser-based managers, which are often targeted by malicious extensions and phishing pages, PureVPN’s Password Manager is purpose-built for privacy and security. With everything working together in one ecosystem, you’re always protected, from your connection to your credentials.

Final word

Passwordless login is the future, but we’re not all there yet. Until every website and service supports passkeys, you need a secure way to store and access the passwords that still matter.

PureVPN gives you the best of both worlds: a safer password manager, full device sync, VPN protection, and more—all through one app.
