Turkey has banned the popular instant messaging platform Discord, as confirmed by the country’s Information Technologies and Communication Authority. The decision, made public on Wednesday, comes after Discord reportedly refused to cooperate with Turkish authorities by not sharing information linked to ongoing investigations.
Legal and Safety Concerns Prompting the Ban
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc explained that an Ankara court authorized the ban due to allegations of severe misuse of the platform, including suspicions of child sexual abuse and obscenity.
The situation surrounding the ban intensified following a distressing event in Istanbul, where a 19-year-old man reportedly murdered two women, leading to nationwide outrage. Reports that some users of Discord celebrated these grievous acts added to governmental calls for more stringent regulation of social media behavior.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu commented on the complexities associated with monitoring platforms like Discord, which offer diverse communication tools including text, audio, and video sharing among its 150 million global users.

Ongoing Digital Restrictions in Turkey
This is not the first instance of Turkey imposing restrictions on digital platforms. In August, authorities also banned Roblox, citing its potentially harmful content for children, and temporarily limited access to Instagram. These actions signal a broader policy shift towards tighter control over digital content within Turkish jurisdiction.
