One patient died from substantial blood loss after surgery, and the other suffered a stroke from a severed vertebral artery. One patient, a childhood acquaintance of Dr. Duntsch, underwent spinal surgery with a physician he trusted and awoke quadriplegic after the surgeon ruptured his vertebral artery. Such severe injuries should have been “never events”—something that should never occur in an operating room, a surgeon told the Dallas-Fort Worth-based D Magazine in a 2016 article that inspired the Dr. Death podcast.
