How to Set Up a VPN for Windows Server

Do you want to install a Virtual Private Network (VPN) on Windows Server, but don’t quite know how to go about it? Well, you have come just to the right place. In this guide, we will highlight the steps to help you set up a VPN on your Windows Server machine.

How to Install a VPN for Windows Server via App

Setting up our client is the easiest way to use a VPN for Windows Server:

  1. Download and Install PureVPN’s Windows client.
  2. Log in using your Username and Password.
  3. Choose your preferred Mode.
  4. Connect to any server location, and you’re good to go!

How to Install a VPN for Windows Server via Manual Configuration

If you want to manually configure a VPN for Windows Server, the process will differ slightly depending on the protocol you choose:

PPTP

  1. Right click the Network icon in the lower right corner of the screen and select Open & Network Settings.
  2. Choose VPN from the list of options in the left panel, and click Add a VPN connection.
  3. Now, insert the following information:
  • Under VPN provider, click the drop-down menu and choose Windows (built-in).
  • In the Connection name box, use a suitable name that you’ll recognize. For example, PureVPN US, DE, etc.
  • Type your desired server address in the Server name or address Check out our complete list of servers here.
  • Under VPN type, click the drop-down menu and select Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP).
  • Under Type of sign-in info, click the drop-down menu and select User name and password.
  • Next, do the following:
  • Enter your PureVPN account details i.e. Username and Password.
  • Check the Remember my sign-in info box and click Save.
  1. Click the newly created VPN connection and choose Connect.
  2. Wait a few seconds.
  3. You’ve successfully connected to PureVPN!

L2TP

  1. Right click the Network icon in the lower right corner of the screen and select Open & Network Settings.
  2. Choose VPN from the list of options in the left panel, and click Add a VPN connection.
  3. Now, insert the following information:
  • Under VPN provider, click the drop-down menu and choose Windows (built-in).
  • In the Connection name box, use a suitable name that you’ll recognize. For example, PureVPN US, DE, etc.
  • Type your desired server address in the Server name or address Check out our complete list of servers.
  • Under VPN type, click the drop-down menu and select Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPSec       (L2TP/IPSec).
  • Under Type of sign-in info, click the drop-down menu and select User name and password.
  • Next, do the following:
  • Enter your PureVPN account details i.e. Username and Password.
  • Check the Remember my sign-in info box and click Save.
  1. Click Change adapter options.
  2. Right click the newly created VPN connection and choose Properties.
  3. Navigate to the Security tab and click Advanced settings.
  4. Click Use preshared key for authentication, enter 12345678 in the Key box and hit the Ok
  5. Select your desired level of encryption under Data Encryption and click Ok.
  6. Click the newly created VPN connection and choose Connect.
  7. Wait a few seconds.
  8. You’ve successfully connected to PureVPN!

SSTP

  1. Right click the Network icon in the lower right corner of the screen and select Open & Network Settings.
  2. Choose VPN from the list of options in the left panel, and click Add a VPN connection.
  3. Now, insert the following information:
  • Under VPN provider, click the drop-down menu and choose Windows (built-in).
  • In the Connection name box, use a suitable name that you’ll recognize. For example, PureVPN US, DE, etc.
  • Type your desired server address in the Server name or address Check out our complete list of servers.
  • Under VPN Type, click the drop-down menu and select Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP).
  • Under Type of sign-in info, click the drop-down menu and select User name and password.
  • Next, do the following:
  • Enter your PureVPN account details i.e. Username and Password.
  • Check the Remember my sign-in info box and click Save.
  1. Click the newly created VPN connection and choose Connect.
  2. Wait a few seconds.
  3. You’ve successfully connected to PureVPN!

IKEv2

  1. Right click the Network icon in the lower right corner of the screen and select Open & Network Settings.
  2. Choose VPN from the list of options in the left panel, and click Add a VPN connection.
  3. Now, insert the following information:
  4. Under VPN provider, click the drop-down menu and choose Windows (built-in).
  • In the Connection name box, use a suitable name that you’ll recognize. For example, PureVPN US, DE, etc.
  • Type your desired server address in the Server name or address Check out our complete list of servers.
  • Under VPN Type, click the drop-down menu and select IKEv2.
  • Under Type of sign-in info, click the drop-down menu and select User name and password.
  • Now, do the following:
  • Enter your PureVPN account details i.e. Username and Password.
  • Check the Remember my sign-in info box and click Save.
  1. Click the newly created VPN connection and choose Connect.
  2. Wait a few seconds.
  3. You’ve successfully connected to PureVPN!

How to Allow Remote Desktop Connection on Windows Server?

Now that you’ve installed a VPN on your Windows Server machine, you’d want to allow remote access so that its resources can be accessed from anywhere:

  1. Right click the This PC icon and select Properties.
  2. Click Remote Settings from the left side of the window.
  3. Once the System Properties screen opens up, click Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop.
  4. Now, click Select Users.
  5. In the Remote Desktop Users window, click the Add button to add your desired user.
  6. In the Select Users window, type in the username and click the Ok
  7. You’ve successfully added a user that can access your Windows Server remotely.

How to Access Windows Server Remotely?

Once you’ve allowed remote desktop connection on your Windows Server machine, follow these steps to access it remotely:

  1. Type Remote Desktop Connection in the search box.
  2. A new window will appear where you’ll be asked to enter the name or IP address of the computer you want to remotely connect to.
  3. Once done, hit the Connect
  4. In the Windows Security window, enter the Username and Password of your Windows Server machine.
  5. Click Ok.
  6. Click Yes to rid yourself of the certificate error.
  7. You’ve successfully accessed the Windows Server remotely!
