How to Set Up PureVPN on a Compatible Router

Roku, older Chromecast models, and smart TVs running operating systems such as Tizen and webOS do not support installing PureVPN directly. To use PureVPN with these devices, you need to configure it on a compatible VPN-enabled router.

PureVPN supports manual configurations on compatible routers from Asus, TP-Link, Linksys, and GL.iNet, as well as routers running DD-WRT firmware.

Here is the general setup process:

  1. Check router compatibility: Confirm that your router supports a VPN client using a protocol supported by PureVPN, such as OpenVPN or WireGuard.
  2. Get your VPN configuration details: Sign in to your PureVPN Member Area. Access the VPN credentials or configuration files required for your router and chosen protocol.
  3. Open your router’s administration panel: Enter your router’s IP address in a browser and sign in.
  4. Configure the VPN client: Find the VPN client settings and enter or import the required PureVPN configuration details. The exact menus and settings depend on your router model and firmware.
  5. Connect to PureVPN: Save the configuration, activate the VPN connection, and check the router’s connection status.

For model-specific steps, check our supported routers and protocols or select your router from these router setup guides. Once your router is connected, follow the instructions below for your streaming device or smart TV.

How to Set Up PureVPN on Roku or Roku TV

Roku does not support native VPN apps, but you can connect your Roku device or Roku TV to a router running PureVPN.

  1. Make sure your router is connected to PureVPN.
  2. On your Roku device, open Settings > Network.
  3. Select the wireless connection setup and choose your VPN-enabled router’s WiFi network.
  4. Enter the WiFi password and select Connect.
  5. Once Roku connects to the network, its internet traffic can use the router’s VPN connection.

How to Set Up PureVPN on Chromecast Without Google TV

Older Chromecast devices, including the original Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra, do not support native VPN apps. You will need to connect them to a VPN-enabled router.

  1. Make sure PureVPN is connected on your compatible router.
  2. Open the Google Home app on your phone or tablet, using the Google account associated with your Chromecast setup.
  3. If your Chromecast is already connected to another WiFi network, open its device settings, go to Device Information > WiFi, and select Forget This Network.
  4. Follow the Chromecast setup process and select the WiFi network configured through your VPN-enabled router.
  5. Enter the network password and complete the connection.
  6. Make sure your casting device can communicate with Chromecast on the local network, then test casting from a supported app.

If Chromecast is no longer connected to its previous WiFi network, you may need to reset it before configuring a new connection. For further assistance, follow our Chromecast setup guide.

How to Set Up PureVPN on Samsung, LG, Vizio, and Other Smart TVs

Samsung TVs running Tizen, LG TVs running webOS, and Vizio TVs without native VPN app support can use PureVPN through a compatible router. Once you have configured PureVPN on your router:

  1. Open your smart TV’s Settings menu.
  2. Go to the Network or Internet Connection settings. The menu names vary by brand and model.
  3. Select your VPN-enabled router’s WiFi network, or connect the TV to the router using an Ethernet cable if supported.
  4. Enter your WiFi password if prompted and complete the network connection.
  5. Confirm that your TV has internet access and that the router’s PureVPN connection is active.
  6. Your TV can now use the VPN connection configured on your router.
