Understanding Router IP Addresses
Routers are assigned two IP addresses: private and public. One is used for communicating within local area networks, known as a private IP address. The other is for connecting to public networks, such as the wider Internet, and known as public IP addresses.
Typically, an Internet Service Provider (ISP) assigns the public IP address to your home or business router. Private IP address allocation, on the other hand, is managed by the network administrator.
If you have never changed your router’s private IP address, it is most likely to use the default IP address which can be found in the router’s documentation – especially if it is a recently purchased make and model.
